NEUROSURGERY CENTER TEAM IN UZHHOROD MASTERS METHODS FOR TREATING NEGLECT
As part of our “Rehabilitation: New Life” project, an intensive training session was held for the multidisciplinary team of the Regional Clinical Center of Neurosurgery and Neurology in Uzhhorod.
16 specialists from the facility deepened their knowledge of the topic: “Neglect and Visuospatial Impairments in Clinical Practice: Assessment, Diagnosis, and Rehabilitation Approaches.”
What is Neglect
Neglect (or spatial neglect syndrome) is a condition in which the patient’s brain, following a stroke or injury, “stops seeing” one-half of the environment or even part of their own body. A person with this impairment might see only half of a room, eat only from one side of their plate, or even fail to recognize their own arm or leg.
This is not a vision problem, but a brain perception issue. Without specific therapy, such patients recover much more slowly because they literally do not utilize a significant portion of their potential.
Practical Training and Expertise
The training was conducted by Anfisa Uryvkova — a physical therapist, neglect therapist, and lecturer at the Department of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy of the NUUPES. The program was highly practical, covering everything from conducting specialized diagnostic tests to building rehabilitation strategies that help the patient’s brain “re-see” the ignored side.
Why It Is Crucial for the Facility
The Uzhhorod Center of Neurosurgery deals with complex cases daily, and the number of patients with neglect is significant. This is why the team was so deeply engaged in the process; specialists actively discussed clinical cases even during breaks.
“Our specialists were eager for this knowledge because the demand for treating such impairments is very high. We saw the results instantly: the training ended over the weekend, and by Monday, the team had already begun implementing the new methods into their work,” the Center noted.

The “Rehabilitation: New Life” project continues to support the professional development of Ukrainian medical workers, as modern expertise is the foundation for high-quality patient recovery.
