Story of the Family-Type Children’s Home (from Taisia)

Our family-type children’s home was established on August 27, 2020. Initially, our family consisted of 8 children aged 7 to 15 years. We are from the Donetsk region, from a small mining town. Everything was going well: we dreamed, planned, and had hope for the future. Together with the children, we decided that we needed a big house, and then we built a new home with our own efforts, where everyone would have their own space, a place that would be spacious and cozy for all. But disaster struck. It was very difficult to leave due to the military aggression, as our dreams, plans, and our entire life were left in our beloved town…

Currently, we live in the Chernivtsi region. Over this time, two of our grown-up children have left the family and are living independently, working, and studying in college, and we have taken in four more little ones. Now, our family consists of 10 children. We live in a house provided by kind people. The children study and make plans for the future. In their free time, they attend a local hand-to-hand combat section and have many friends here. The little ones love to draw and jump on the trampoline. One of the older daughters, Ilona, participates in sports competitions and has already won first place in her weight category. Another daughter, Maria, participates in vocal competitions remotely and recently won second place in the “Bakhmut Spring” vocal competition, dreaming of becoming a famous singer. Our daughter Christina, who is now a graduate, once won third place in a video blogging competition and dreams of studying journalism. Our already grown-up daughter, Kateryna, lives with her husband and grandchildren in a neighboring region. They also evacuated from the Kharkiv region and sometimes visit us.

We were helped to adapt to the new place by local and regional services and charitable foundations. They helped us purchase the necessary items and household appliances. However, unfortunately, at this time, we still have some needs that we cannot meet on our own.

We also purchased and delivered a refrigerator worth 23,000 UAH to Taisia Marchenko’s family-type children’s home.

6 children, Velyka Sevastyanivka, Cherkasy region (displaced from Kherson region, Fedorivka village).

Story of the Family-Type Children’s Home (from Taisia)

The Marchenko family had a turning point when Taisia fell seriously ill, and the doctors’ prognosis was very bleak. It was then that they realized they wanted to be parents. “Since we couldn’t have our own children,” Taisia shares, “we decided to adopt a child or children. The first one we adopted was two-year-old Andriy.” Despite the doctors’ prognosis, Taisia recovered, and the couple decided to take in more children. “So, we took in four more children, making it five children in total.”

In 2019, their loving family welcomed two more little members, and Taisia and her husband created a family-type children’s home.

“Currently, we are raising six children, as three have already left the family-type children’s home, but we still care for our children who have moved on.”

The family endured occupation in their hometown but decided to leave in pursuit of safer living conditions within Ukraine’s controlled territory. “We passed through 29 checkpoints of the occupiers. When we saw our military and other people, realizing we were in a safer place, the emotions we felt were indescribable… Our friends suggested we move to a village in the Cherkasy region, so we went there. Kind people provided us with housing, for which we are very grateful.”

This assistance was provided under the “Help to Family-Type Children’s Homes” program.
