QUALITY HEALTHCARE FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN: HOW WE PROVIDE SUPPORT DURING THE WAR
The full-scale war has presented unprecedented challenges for Ukraine’s healthcare system. Hospitals operate under extreme conditions—facing the threat of shelling, shortages of resources, and overburdened medical staff. Access to quality medical care remains critically important, especially for women and children, who belong to the most vulnerable groups of the population.
Pregnant women give birth in bomb shelters, maternity hospitals function amid explosions and power outages, and many injured women require long-term physical and psychological rehabilitation. Children also suffer from the effects of war, both physically and emotionally, impacting their overall health and development.
That is why supporting medical institutions has become one of our key focus areas. We have been implementing these initiatives for many years, and since 2022, we have expanded and intensified our efforts.
Supporting women in wartime
One of our priorities is assisting healthcare facilities that provide medical care for women. We emphasize equipping hospitals specializing in reproductive health, obstetrics, and gynecology with modern medical equipment. This is crucial for women affected by the war, as many not only suffer physical injuries but also experience severe psychological distress, which can lead to complications during pregnancy or exacerbate chronic conditions.
“The health of women during wartime has become a major priority. The horrors of shelling, fear for their children, anxiety for their husbands and families—all of this takes a toll. We are proud to contribute to their treatment and recovery in safe and comfortable conditions.”
Our efforts focus on supporting female defenders, emergency service workers, expectant mothers, internally displaced women, and those who have been injured or live in frontline areas with limited access to medical care.
Some of our key projects to improve medical conditions include:
• Hysteroscopic and surgical equipment for Lviv Regional Hospital named after Lypa, enabling minimally invasive gynecological surgeries.
• A biochemical analyzer for Zaporizhzhia Maternity Hospital, allowing doctors to diagnose patients more quickly and accurately, especially in cases of pregnancy or childbirth complications.
• An obstetric transformer bed and patient monitor for Nikopol Maternity Hospital, ensuring safe and comfortable childbirth, even in complex medical cases.
• Renovation of basement facilities at the Institute of Pediatrics, Obstetrics, and Gynecology of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine to allow medical services to continue during attacks.
Helping children: restoring health and supporting the future
Children are among the most vulnerable groups affected by war. We prioritize providing hospitals with the necessary equipment to improve treatment conditions and accelerate the recovery of young patients.
Key projects include:
• An ultrasound machine and ENT equipment for Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital, which suffered damage from missile strikes, enabling comprehensive diagnostics and treatment.
• A gynecological chair, syringe, and infusion pumps for Kherson Children’s Hospital, which serves not only children but also pregnant women and adolescent girls in need of reproductive health support.
• Hearing screening equipment for newborns at Mykolaiv Children’s Hospital, ensuring early diagnosis and timely intervention, which is crucial for child development.
• A portable vein scanner for Sumy Children’s Hospital, enabling quick and painless vein detection for children undergoing oncology treatments and other complex procedures.
Over the past two years, our projects in obstetrics, gynecology, and pediatrics have benefited 8 medical facilities across different regions of Ukraine, providing 14 units of modern medical equipment and essential supplies. This has significantly improved diagnostics, treatment, and patient care for women and children, particularly in wartime conditions. The total budget for these projects amounts to 9.3 million UAH.
Rehabilitation: helping women recover from injuries
We are also implementing a large-scale rehabilitation project aimed at not only improving physical recovery but also supporting social reintegration. This initiative helps women affected by the war regain an active life.
A special focus is placed on restoring reproductive health and treating war-related injuries among women. Currently, the project covers seven medical facilities in four regions of Ukraine and continues to expand as needs grow. It is funded by international donors, allowing us to provide modern rehabilitation equipment, organize training for medical professionals, and improve recovery conditions for every patient.
Moving Forward
Supporting hospitals and their patients remains our absolute priority. We continue to provide medical institutions with essential equipment and expand rehabilitation programs. Our projects aim to ensure that every woman has access to quality medical care, that no pregnancy goes unsupported, and that children receive the treatment and care they need.
The war is ongoing, and the demand for quality healthcare is only increasing. Our goal is to help Ukrainian women and children preserve and restore their health, even in the most challenging times.
